Jean-Honore Fragonard (1732-1806) Fragonard studied under Boucher for four years, and later was appointed First Painter to the King - the peak of success for a French artist of his time. This painting of a young girl reading is one of Fragonard's best-known works. The glowing tones of the picture suggest a fireplace or sunlit window nearby, casting warmth and light on the entire scene.
