John George Brown (1831-1911) Brown was born in England, but later moved to America where he tried to faithfully recreate the styles and scenery of his tie. In this painting the clothing of the children places the picture in the 19th century, but the activity is timeless: two young men helping their frightened companion across a rough bridge. The sunlit autumn foliage surrounding the children gives the entire painting a feeling of warmth.
